I had parts of this going through my head this morning, and decided to re-visit an old favorite in the poetry department. It is rather fun to read out loud. From Lewis Carroll, found in Through the Looking Glass:
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.
‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Toves, Raths and Borogroves by John Tenniel
I must leave a note to you today! Many ions ago in the covered wagon days, my 4th grade teacher required a poem memorized, and this little verse was the one I chose. ( I think because at the time, I felt this was a silly assignment….) The funny thing is, I have used this very poem to entertain my students, and actually even when speaking to ladies groups on “some things that just don’t make sense” . Thanks for the flashback! : }
🙂
Oh how fun! I don’t think I could manage to memorize this; I’m not good with non-words LOL! Good for you! 🙂
I memorized this one as well! I loved the Cheshire Cat so much I was him in the school play :).

OMG! I was the Cheshire Cat too! Sixth grade…
Nothing like wearing a fake fur suit in a 90-degree school gym LOL!
